Working Flawlessly on a MacBook Air M1

*by T***O on Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2022*

I recently upgraded my music studio from an aging iMac setup to a MacBook Air M1, integrating the MacBook Air required a bit of thought in how multiple peripheral devices would be hooked up to a computer with only two USB C/Thunderbolt 3 ports.Obviously the docks are aimed at users that have specific needs, for me I would be hooking up an external monitor, a thunderbolt 3 audio interface, a USB MIDI interface, and multiple USB hard drives. I had watched various YouTube reviews and one video in particular by Jon Sine using this dock is really what sold me on the Wavlink, he's got a pretty extensive setup and the Wavlink has been handling his setup effortlessly for over a year so I knew my setup would be solid. One thing I will mention, and this goes for any dock, once you get everything plugged in and up and running properly, place your dock in an area that it will be largely undisturbed, it's not recommended to be moving your dock around and fiddling with connections while everything is up and running. If necessary, you can always add a USB hub that allows you to plug and unplug flash drives, etc. quickly. Also, with this setup I always have an available USB C/Thunderbolt 3 available on the MacBook Air.I know there are highly rated products by OWC and CalDigit, but I don't know that they would've performed any better and I've read reports of those docks running very hot at times and can confirm that the Wavlink does not get very hot ever. It's amazing to be able to bring the MacBook into the studio and plug in a single Thunderbolt 3 cable and have my entire studio up and running in seconds, everything has been running flawlessly for the past few months for me.

Great for many needs, for a short time

UPDATE: January 10, 2022For some reason today my external monitor stopped displaying through the Wavlink. I went through the normal troubleshooting steps to no end. I am now connected to my external monitor using a USB-C to HDMI adapter. The rest of the Wavlink seems to work and I'll continue to try to get things in working order - but this seems like it's a lost cause. Everything is up to date. I downloaded the latest updates to my system and the drivers from Wavlink and there's been no change. If I can get this working, I'll put the steps I took to get there in this review. Otherwise - this is now strictly a USB-C hub, which is nice, it's simply not what I need and not what I purchased this device for.Second EDIT - I have been unable to get it working very well. After unplugging it for a few days, I reconnected everything. It seems to work for the following: Displayport, external hard drive (still fairly fast, but seems slower. This is subjective since I don't have any measuring capabilities), USB A wireless mouse dongle, Ethernet, and one other USB A connection. I haven't tried the SD/micro SD card slots. External Webcam connected to any of the USB ports does not work, webcam works when directly connected to the Macbook and on other devices. It's back to being VERY HOT after a bit of use.Original Review below:-------------------------------------------------This is actually working well. for my needs. What do I like?* Compact and unobtrusive* Has several ports and monitor connecter that I need for my work (monitor seems to work much better than with the standard USB-C to HDMI connecter)* Charges my laptop* USB-A ports keep passing power when the laptop is disconnectedWhat I don't like?* Can get very hot (though it no longer gets as hot as when it was new)* The second USB-C port only provides power when the laptop is connected* Laptop has crashed twice (as of the writing of this) since I started using. Logs report it was because of an issue with a Thunderbolt connected device (this dock was the only connected device both times)

Pretty impressive though laptop use requires compromises

This kind of Thunderbolt dock is a great idea and a no brainer for use with a desktop computer or if you happen to use your laptop at a desk or on a table. It provides high speed connection to Thunderbolt compatible SSD as well as great USB 3 access to disks, SD cards and so on.Its weakness is when used with a laptop on one's lap. It would be really nice to have a laptop computer connected to charging and auxiliary data drives. This device works, but there are compromises. To start with, there are active 2m Thunderbolt cables sold, but they are unreliable. Disk drives will randomly unmount and the associated error messages will pop up. The disk is usually fine and can just be reconnected and remounted, but at least one drive has gone bad after such a disconnect. The solution seems to be using a 0.7m cable which is awkward, but acceptable. The adapter has to be right next to my seat on my sofa, and one has to be careful with the cable. Disks still go offline now and then, but every few weeks rather than several times a day.The device runs surprisingly hot. This means it has to be properly ventilated. It can't be stuffed into a drawer out of the way. This may be a function of its need to power a modern laptop. The device will shut off, or at least disconnect, if it overheats, so this puts more constraints and where it can be placed.I'd give this five stars for desktop use, but not everyone uses a laptop at a desk. Still, it is an amazing technology, and with a bit of planning and tinkering with the device and with the furniture, it does provide a magical link for both power and data.
