One of my favorites reads this year

Purchased for my KindleOh my, this book was wonderful. Consider my Jamie McGuire cherry popped. I haven't read anything thing else by her yet, it took zombies to make me hop on the train. She has a great writing style and I absolutely adored Red Hill.I'll be honest, I don't usually pay full price for books. #truestory. I have a wish list full of titles and when they go on sale, I one click. I don't think I'm being cheap, well maybe I am. I love a good sale, and especially with Authors I'm not familiar with, I'm hesitant to purchase a full price book from them. Red Hill though... I wanted to read this book so badly. So I bit the bullet and bought it the weekend after it came out. I was not disappointed.I love zombie books so it was either going to be a hit, or real low on my suck o meter. Ever since I read the Forest of Hands and Teeth books, these un-dead creatures have stolen a piece of my heart. I'm a huge fan of the show walking dead, and though I'm not a zombie expert by any means, I was still worried these ones would fall flat for me.Worrying was stupid. They were perfect. Red Hill is told from 3 different POV's. I loved this. You have no idea how seamlessly all their stories connected. I was like, "OMG". Yup, I was. This book turned me into a giddy school age valley girl curled up on my couch.Story starts out from Scarlet's point of view. She's dropping her girls off at school and heading to work. She works in a hospital guys. Can you imagine working there when crap starts to hit the fan. Yeah, my heart was in my throat. Because I knew what was going on at first... but no one else did. And that is definitely one place you do not want to be. But BRAVO to McGuire for placing her main character in that profession because the angle it gives you is purely terrifying.Everything about this book, I adored. There is death, obviously. There is gore! Not too much, just right is what Goldie lox would say. There is drama, relationships, and that's important. Just because the world has gone to hell, does not mean you stop living. The simplest changes or events in life can alter how you view things, people, especially relationships. I liked that the focus here was not just on people dying and getting their guts eaten out. It's about survival, hope, and coping with loss. Dealing with the cards you are given, and handling it like a f'ing boss. This is one of my favorite reads this year. Hands down, it will make the top ten for sure. I think it goes without saying, Red Hill is a great Halloween read. I mean, come on.. It's zombies!! Trying to eat you!! RUN!!! Good stuff!

    LOVED IT!!!!!!

Red Hill is a beautiful, well written story that grabs you from the beginning. I am typically not into zombie books but Beautiful Disaster is one of my all-time favorite books. How can you not love Travis Maddox??? I do!! Swoon. Anyway. Knowing how great Beautiful Disaster was, I knew Red Hill would be great too. And Jamie did not disappoint.Red Hill is told from 3 points of view (which I love, I am a big fan of stories told from multiple POVs). Scarlet is a divorced mother of 2 girls, Jenna and Halle. She works in the hospital when the "outbreak" is brought in. She is determined to survive and do whatever she has to do to get to her girls, who she had just dropped off at their fathers. Nathan's wife just left him. Literally- like that day. He wants to keep his daughter, Zoe, safe. Miranda is a college student. Her and her sister, Ashley, and their boyfriends are together trying to get to safety. The story alternates between Scarlet's, Nathan's and Miranda's POVs as they struggle to survive and get to the safety of a ranch named Red Hill. Along the way they meet various strangers and all of their lives end up intertwining. The story is one of struggling to get to safety during the outbreak and then trying to survive once they get there.Red Hill makes you think. First could this really happen? Is this a possibility in our lifetime? And second how would we react? What would we do to survive? Hopefully we will never find out. The characters in Red Hill were so brave and strong. I can only hope that if ever faced with a disaster I would act the same.Jamie's writing is beautiful. This is not a story primarily of zombie fluff, blood, violence and gore. Yes it is a zombie story and yes there is some blood, violence and gore. But this is so much more. This is the story of the characters- of their will to live, to survive, of their emotions, of their struggles. This is the story of love- the love of family, the love between a parent and child, the love when we fall in love and what we would do for those we love. Jamie's writing is very descriptive. The scenes played out in my head as I read them. Overall, a great book and a definite must read. Another great job by Jamie! For more reviews visit lovenbooks.com

Action-packed, full of emotion and disaster.

I do love me some zombies and apocalyptic goings on.Red Hill is written in first person, but we're not just limited to getting the thoughts about the apocalypse from one point of view. We're treated to the views of Scarlet, Nathan and Miranda, the three main characters.Scarlet is a mother of two daughters, Halle and Jenna. Working at the hospital and taking care of her children pretty much takes up most of her time. With no man in her life, she's an independent woman, getting things done and taking no rubbish from nobody. As the story progresses, we get to see how much of a strong woman she really is. Actually, I'm just gonna throw it out there and say she's a kick-ass zombie killer in this book, and there's nothing better than a female taking the lead role. She's feisty, fearless, and when her children are involved, she laughs in the face of danger. She takes control of situations that a normal person would probably lose their wits in. She will do anything for her girls, and that reflects through her actions within the story. I loved Scarlet. How she takes on board the fact that a zombie apocalypse istaking place is how I want to be if a zombie apocalypse was to happen.Nathan is an adorable guy, I have to say it. He works damn hard, and he's married to the most miserable woman in the world. I felt so sorry for him. His confidence is at rock bottom and he's in a loveless marriage. When we meet him, he hears the radio in his car inform it's listeners, "This is a red alert from the emergency broadcast system. Canton County sheriff's department reports a highly contagious virus arriving in our state has been confirmed. If at all possible, stay indoors..." He races to Zoe's school to pick her up. McGuire really enforces the image of disarray and panic when Nathan enters his daughter's school. She tells us of "frantic mothers" and "frightened parents". Once Nathan has his daughter safely in the car with him, he takes them both home, and that's when he finds the note from Aubrey, basically saying that she can't be a mother and that she's left. From that moment on, Nathan does what he has to do to keep him and his daughter safe. But that's a lot easier said than done. We're first introduced to Miranda as she's driving towards her father's ranch, along with her younger sister Ashley, Ashley's boyfriend Cooper, and Miranda's boyfriend Bryce. The panic is just reaching where they are at this point; people are running past her car, banging into her wing mirrors and bumping into the side of it. After news of the outbreak reached them, their classes were cancelled and they decided their dad's ranch was the safest place for them to go. As a person is taken down beside their car and eaten by someone else, the four of them know that this isn't a game. This is real, and suddenly, their only aim is to try and stay alive.I think McGuire thought of everything whilst writing Red Hill. She even included zombie children, which a lot of people don't write about when writing about this type of genre. I think it just makes it even more real. She really creates an atmosphere of disaster and panic. Crying, screaming, anxiety, it's all in there. I got that lost in this story, I became creeped out and panicked about there being zombies in my back garden. Everything seems so real and detailed, she's really put a lot of thought into this novel, and it shows. It's gripping, exciting, it keeps you on the edge of your seat. I read this in a day, that's how good it is. It's action packed, full of emotion and disaster. I genuinely can't do it justice with my words.I know for a fact that I'm giving Red Hill a worthy rating of 10/10.It really is THAT good.If you're a zombie-lover, then this is for you. If you like tense, dramatic, emotional scenes, then this book is for you. If you love action-packed novels with a kick-ass woman as the main character, then this book is for you.
