Why? The basic premise is easy to follow.1. State the problem2. Work with Child to solve the problem.Yes, I think there are actually more steps which I cannot remember. Still, these two seem to work sort of, especially the part about acknowledging the problem. Kids really like when you show an honest effort to understand their issue.Honestly, that is all I remember about this book but when my kid is throwing a fit I will often think to myself "ok, state the problem" and they will often become noticeably calmer. I got this when my difficult kid was pre-verbal. My less difficult kid also responds well to these tactics except when tired in which case, all bets are off. Fatigue does strange things to small children.Actually, just remember that last point: "fatigue can do strange things to small children" and you should be good to go. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ I still love this book - especially the areas on Active Listening *by E***E on Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2017* I first learned of this book during my last internship in Grad School and have been teaching parents many of the PET ever since.As a now licensed clinician, I still love this book - especially the areas on Active Listening, learning your childs non-verbal cues and signals, being in tune with your childs needs and decoding their language. I'm a big believer in teaching children about social-emotional literacy and making that a part of every day parenting. I love how it goes over scenarios and issues from young children to tweens and teens, and teaches parents (on a basic level) to communicate with their kids in a way they understand and is non-judgmental and non-threatening.The only draw back to the book is that I don't believe it under emphasized how important boundaries and rules are, and almost makes it seem as though children should be treated as equals to parents, which should not be the case. I first purchased a copy thirty five years ago, when i was raising my children. . I got copies for each of my kids when they became. Parents,. Now for my niece. You would think I would have copies everywhere, but each was well used. Wonderful book on how to communicate clearly with children, manage strife and still keep your sanity and remain the parent authority..You become an " effective parent". Who says children don't come with an instruction manual?
