I do, however, have a relative who's deep into the design of a new studio, with some very new ideas (at least in his part of the world) on how to set one up. As I'm helping draft his business plan, anything that approaches this industry in a businesslike manner was a good catch as far as I'm concerned. I found the Mueller book while wandering through things to buy on Amazon and thought it'd be a good research tool.And that's exactly what Start & Run a Tattoo and Body Piercing Business is -- a tool. I discovered in helping my relative was that most of these operations start with not a lot of business planning. Mueller takes a far more organized approach -- he writes talks about how to write a good business plan, and about everything from shop layout to hiring staff. He provides sample forms for releases, discusses equipment and helps the reader look at how to run his/her shop in a businesslike manner. It's easy to read for non-business types. It's logical, organized and has a ton of good advice. I wish I'd found it at the beginning of my writing, as it'd have provided me with direction that I had to find in a far more circuitous route.The caution here is that Mueller is location based and as any potential shop owner will soon learn, every town, county and state has a massive set of rules (or interprets rules to apply) for tat shops. There are building officials, health officials, fire officials, code officials, licenses, legislation and myriad quirks. Start and Run isn't the directions -- it's the outline. The potential shop owner should read this in detail, then do his/her homework locally. What Start and Run gives you is a guide for what kind of footwork you need to do.
