All steel targets will pit no mater how far or how fast the bullet is traveling. Let us remember "every action has an equal and opposite reaction" so the energy to some degree is absorbed by the target. To limit energy transfer, mount the target on chains using anchor rodes on an enlarged saw horse - see attached picture. The right one as you can see from the picture took a beating using: 22, 9mm, 45, 5.7, 556, 300blk and 308. While the left one took 300 win mag rounds. They both held up pretty good. Perfect size for precision shooting also.
