Here's the simple experiment that proves it. And you can repeat it yourself! *by E***R on Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2015* This scale seems set up to trick you into thinking that it gives reproducible weight measurements to the nearest 0.2 pound. Unfortunately, it's only accurate to about a pound despite the fact that it shows a digit after the decimal point. (More on that below.) I don't want to accuse Utopia of being misleading, but it's hard to reach any other conclusion after the testing I did. Draw your own conclusions, but here's my experience:I have a medical balance-type scale and have kept track of my body weight for several decades. My weight typically goes up and down by a few tenths of a pound from day to day. While away from home for an extended period, I wanted to buy a bathroom scale to continue my weight records. The low-cost Utopia USJK-B01-1, which had good reviews and promised "Precise measurements made in graduation increments of 0.2 lbs", seemed just the thing.When I began using the scale I found that it displayed exactly the same weight every morning with no variation. It was pretty clear that my weight hadn't suddenly become constant but rather that the scale wasn't making precise measurements to the nearest 0.2 pounds as claimed.I wanted to test how responsive the scale was to changes in weight. I didn't have a set of 0.2-pound weights but I had a graduated cylinder with which I could measure out water in 0.2-pound (90.7 ml.) increments. I put the scale on a hard, flat surface and weighed myself holding an empty coffee can. Then I measured out 0.2 pounds of water, poured it into the coffee can, and got on the scale again. I repeated this until I was weighing myself with almost five pounds of water.Click on the graph below to see my results. (To make this review less personal I've subtracted my body weight from the measurements!) As I added weight in 0.2-pound increments the scale continued to display the original weight until I had added a full pound, after which the scale's display jumped by 1.4 pounds. This trend continued, as shown in the graph. In general, my weight had to increase by about a pound, after which the scale's displayed weight would jump by about a pound. The worst behavior in my little trial was having exactly the same weight displayed all the way from 1.8 pounds added to 3.0 pounds added.Clearly the Utopia scale is not measuring weights with the claimed precision of 0.2 pounds. It may *display* a weight to that precision but a weight change has to be five times that much before the scale actually *responds* to the weight change.A number of reviewers have happily reported that they got on the scale several times and got the same weight every time. Of course they did! The scale is totally unresponsive to small weight changes! (The four cheap strain gauges in the feet will yield a slightly different weight every time you get on the scale.) If my unit is any indication, unless they gained a pound between trials, the scale's weight just isn't going to change!How might the scale be set up to behave like this? Moving on from what I actually measured to sheer speculation, here's one possibility:The manufacturer wants to give the impression that the scale can measure to the nearest 0.2 lbs. and that it will reproduce that exact same weight if you get on the scale again. My guess is that the scale's software stores its most recent weight value, which of course it reported to 0.2 pounds. If the next weight it sees is "close" to the stored value it just reports the stored value. This makes you think that the scale is incredibly accurate and can return exactly the same weight to the nearest 0.2 lbs again and again.On the other hand, if the next weight the scale sees isn't "close" to the previous one (and "close" seems to mean "within about a pound") the scale decides that something has changed and returns its estimate of the new weight instead of returning the stored value. It then stores that weight and continues to report that value until it sees a new weight that isn't "close".Obviously I have no idea if this is what the scale actually does, but it would explain the behavior that I observed – as well as explaining why so many pleased reviewers keep seeing exactly the same weight when they get on and off the scale multiple times!You can do this experiment yourself and see how your scale behaves. You don't need a graduated cylinder or a laboratory balance - all you need is a measuring cup and an empty coffee can or mixing bowl or any vessel that will hold a few pounds of water. Weigh yourself with the empty vessel, then get off the scale and add an increment of water to your vessel. You can add increments of any small size - to match the scale’s claimed precision I used 0.2 pounds of water, which is almost exactly 3 fluid ounces. After every increment, get back on the scale and record the weight. Continue this until you've added 4 or 5 pounds so you can see what the trend is. See for yourself whether the scale changes by 0.2 pounds every time you increase the weight by 0.2 pounds. I'll bet it doesn't!Whatever the cause, I was not satisfied with a scale that only responded to one-pound changes, and I returned my unit to Amazon. As to whether what I observed is typical of this model Utopia scale, I'd be interested to see any comments from those who may have done (or might do) a trial like mine. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Same weight when stepping on and off it several times in a row!! *by H***U on Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2015* If you are looking for a simple bathroom scale that just just gives your weight I would highly recommend this item. This scale is super simple to setup, in the box it has 1 sheet of paper for the instructions. (hopefully the added picture of the whole instruction page gives you an idea as well) It tells you that you need to turn on the scale from the bottom using a switch. This same switch has you choose how you want to display the weight on the screen by either in kg or lb. Other than the display screen having a backlight to display the numbers in the dark that's about as fancy as it's features goes. This scale doesn't measure anything like water weight, body fat % or BMI so if you are wanting a special scale that will tell you these things this would not be the scale for you.One thing I like about this scale that I should add is that this scale always gives me the same weight when testing it 2 or 3 times in a row. I have had the worst luck using other scales in the past where you get on the scale, it would tell you one weight, then get off it, wait like 10 seconds, get back on it only to be a different weight for some reason. I haven't had any problems like this with this scale! Just stand still on the scale and when the numbers stop moving for a few seconds it has always come back the same numbers for me. I kept doing since I've had this scale for over a week now and it hasn't given me a different weight yet!The way the scale looks isn't half bad either.
