Both the underquilt and the pillow did have a weak smell of sheep. At least to me it was faint, but since I have a poor sense of smell, it was probably stronger than I thought.UPDATE 07/09/16 - I took away another star because when I went to flip over the Cuddle Ewe (happens every four weeks) I noticed a large number of the areas around the little circles was ripping/ripped apart. Can I still use it? Sure but I think I'm going to have to find a couple of sheets to sew together to make a giant pillow case for it for further protection. I will not buy this product again at this point.UPDATE 10/06/16 - I finally decided it was time to contact the company that makes these regarding the quality/tearing issue the middle of August 2016. The customer service was excellent with timely responses and prompt replacement service. Long story short I was asked to submit photos of the tearing, and a replacement was immediately made and sent to me. The quality of the fabric was more like the canvas material that I remembered from the first one I had purchased several years ago. This one, too, had a strong smell to it, which could just be something to which I'm more sensitive and has dissipated over the past several weeks. I have fibromyalgia and even the Sleep Number bed I have is not very comfortable, so I decided to try the Cuddle Ewe quilt. It's better than a plain mattress, but it flattens out within one night and needs daily "fluffing", and halfway through the night it "bottoms-out" again. I definitely don't think it's worth the price and the "free pillow" that is included is very flat and covered with a material that borders on plastic. It's not conducive to a good night's sleep.
